12/2002 Tech-no Teens present at  the Christa McAuliffe Conference

"Tech-N Teens"

Let's Begin:   The idea for an "all girls" technology group began after attending the Christa McAuliffe Conference in Nashua, NH back in the fall of 2000.  The presentation I attended covered the need of girls in technology.
Real Girls Do Technology!  Presenter Kathleen Hill

During this same time we received our latest issue of the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse (ENC) Focus Magazine.  The article  CyberSisters Jumpstart Girls' Interest in Math, Science, and Technology  by Cerise Roth-Vinson.  This article and  presentation reported that the number of women receiving degrees in Computer Science had dropped by almost 50% since the 1980s!

"How can we as teachers persuade girls to become involved in technology and science?   When beginning a group, can the group be made up only of girls?  What subject(s) matter would we begin with? "  These were questions we asked ourselves, our district's cross-site technology team and the girls who began the Tech-no Teen Group in January 2002.
