Our first meet was in January 2002

The Tech-no Teens were given instruction on making a Web Quest and basic HTML use with Microsoft Word 2000.  We noticed that the students were comfortable in the usage of Microsoft 1 WORD webpage  design, as its GUI looks very similar to the word processing feature of WORD that they familiar with.

The Tech-no Teens regularly met at the elementary school, Cousens for two hours, one afternoon per week.

The girls went over the parts of a primary quest.  Introduction, Task, Process, Resources, Conclusion and Evaluation.  The Web Quest Model was first developed in 1995 by Bernie Dodge, with Tom March in San Diego State University.  We used his WebQuest design and information web site:  http://webquest.sdsu.edu/webquest.html

We then browsed primary web quest sites on the Internet:

Next we searched through our first grade curriculum (provided by the first grade teaching team at Cousens School) to find a topic for our Quest.  The Tech-no Teens decided on the subject, trees in Maine.  (The Maine Forest, Seasons and Trees are found under the first grade science curriculum related to the Maine State Learning Results.)  The quest will add to 2our studies of this subject matter.

Our Cousens School's computer lab is adjacent to the library where all of our information was gathered.  Cousens Librarian Mrs. Dixon provided our group with all the resources within our library on the subject.  Our Web Quest then can also be used by students who (for one reason or another) haven't permission to use the Internet at school.

The group decided on three trees; oak, maple and pine for students to choose from.  Each student created a tree information page for step2:
http://staff.msad71.net/techno/TreeQuest/Process/STEP2.htm
Then they divided up the parts of the web quest.

Upon completion, we then imported the Web Quest from Word 2000 onto our Web Server using the software  Microsoft FrontPage 2002.

Our very first Quest is Terrific Maine Trees.

The Tech-no Teens have gained knowledge about technology and the use of the Internet.

  1. They have studied the components of a web quest and its design.
  2. Completed the research in the library and on the Internet.
  3. Became experienced users of Basic HTML, WORD2000, and FrontPage2002. (also KidPix3)
  4. Studied the function of the LAN server and working via our WAN within the multi-server network.

Now the Tech-no Teens have each begun their own Quest for the first grade team.  Following these we shall begin to work along with another team of teachers to create Web Quests for their curriculum AND we hope to expand our Tech-no Teen membership!

* A reminder that some of the following First Grade Web Quests may still be under construction.  Students are now using FrontPage 2002:

  1. Needed:  Microsoft Office2000.   Open WORD2000.  Go to menu: file - new.    Choose the "General Tab"  and   then Webpage.        BACK

  2. Along with this science curriculum all Cousens School's first grade classrooms adopt a tree that is found on the school grounds.  The tree is observed throughout the seasons and changes are documented in scientific detail.  Students also go on seasonal woodland walks at a local nature trail examining changes in the forest.  In February/March first graders visit Harris Farm in Dayton ME to research maple sugar.  BACK
