Copse and
Robbers (Gr. 3-8) - From ARKive Education, students are tested on
their investigative skills to solve a “kid-friendly” murder case, a wood
pigeon. Students will scour the crime scene for clues, investigate
suspects and analyze the evidence collected. Many of the skills
associated with scientific investigation are embedded throughout the
activity. |
Design a
Habitat (Gr. 3-9) - Students need to help the black-footed ferret, a
mammal on the endangered species list, find a place to live. Their task
is to create a habitat in which the ferret can safely eat, sleep and by
happy. An understanding of the different biomes and habitats will be
important to this mission. |
ID-Fit (Gr. 3-8) - This challenging site in forensics asks students
to recreate a suspect's face. Compare/control features such as
hair, eyes, nose and mouth. The challenge comes from the original
photo being constantly distorted due to interference, not to mention
limited amount of time to complete the task. |
Science of Baseball
(Gr. 4-10) - A collection of activities that look at physics,
biomechanics and baseball. Find answers to questions about how a ball
curves when thrown, how fast does a batter have to react to hit a 95
miles per hour ball and more. Flash is required for this site. |
Simple Machines |
Break It Down! (Gr. 3-8) - This interactive activity asks students
to manipulate a machine made up of gears, ramps and levers. The
goal is to simply the machine by removing parts of the machine while
keeping the flag to the right from hitting the bottom. |
Ed-Heads Explore Simple Machines
(Gr. 3-8) - Examine the rooms in this typical house and find the 10
simple machines in each. When found, each machine will need to be
classified into what type of simple machine it is. For a
challenge, go to the barn and explore compound simple machines. |
The Machine Detective
(Gr. 2-8) - Take notes as you learn about pulleys, wheels and
levers. Then, use your detective skills to find these simple
machines in objects we see and use everyday. |
ParkWorld Plot (Gr. 3-8) - "This website helps students understand
how engineers use the science of forces to design thrilling, fun, and -
most importantly - safe amusement park rides. Detailed
descriptions of many science (and physics) terms are provided. The story
involves the manager of the amusement park requesting help from the
students. The manager challenges the students to discover the safety
flaws in amusement rides." |
| |
Rube Goldberg Machine
(Gr. K-12) - How many simple machines can be found in one Honda
automobile? After the movie, read below to learn how much time and
effort was put into this project. |
Space |
Earth, Sun, & Moon
(Gr. 4-7) - Use this activity to learn how these objects in space
move and interact with one another. After the activity, take the
interactive quiz to demonstrate what you've learned. |
HubbleSite.org
(Gr. K-12) - From the Hubble Telescope comes pictures, interactive
games, & interesting facts. |
The Nine
Planets (Gr. 3-8) - An in-depth exploration of the solar system with
pictures and graphics. |
Nova: Mars - Design a Parachute (Gr. 5-12) - Students must consider
multiple factors including volume, drag and stability in designing a
parachute that will safely deliver the next probe to the Martian
surface. Detailed instructions and requirements are provided. |
U.S. Space Age Interactive Timeline (Gr. 3-12) - In recognition on
the 50th anniversary of the launching of man's first space satellite
Sputnik, National Public Radio has created an interactive timeline.
The timeline, which documents the start of the "space race" to today and
future space plans, contains important dates, photographs and audio
clips of important events. |
Virtual Space Tour (Gr. 6-12) - A narrated multimedia-rich
exploration of the solar system. |
Weather |
Climate Challenge (Gr.
6-12) - With climate and climate change a growing topic for discussion
and debate in the world, this site does well to provide facts, "hot"
topics, and multimedia venues to help understand climate change and
global warming. Site requires Flash for optimal performance. |
Forces of Nature (Gr. 6-12) - From
National Geographic, this interactive site investigates four of natures'
most devastating forces: volcanoes, hurricanes, tornados, and
earthquakes. View an animated cross-section of a hurricane, analyze the
characteristics of a thunderstorm to see if a tornado is possible,
predict the paths of lavas flows from a volcano, and more. |
Fun Frosty Activities
(Gr. 1-12) - Solve snowy puzzles, build your own snowman, and make your
own snowflake! |
NOVA:
Science Now - Hurricanes (Gr. 5-12) - This media-rich website
contains a wide variety of information on topics include Hurricane
Katrina, online quizzes and video. Learn how meteorologists use all the
tools at their disposal to try and predict the behavior of a storm and
track where it will go. FLASH is required for video components. |
Weather by Edheads
(Gr. 2-8) - Learn how to predict & report on the weather. |
Wild Weather Adventure (Gr. 3-6) – From NASA, students will learn
about weather and geography through this interactive board game. Up to
four human players are allowed, otherwise students will play against the
computer. Once students customize their “weather ship” they must answer
questions in order to move ahead in the game (there are three levels of
difficulty). |
Work | Force | Energy |
Changing Sounds
(Gr. 3-8) - Learn how sounds change depending on how musical
