Adventures of Tintin at Sea (Gr. 3-12) - For the student writer, use a comic strip to explore how parts of a story are linked together or practice connecting words and images together in both English and French.  For the student artist, see how comic strips images are derived from real photographs.  Descriptions and comments provided by the comic artist himself.  All topics incorporate a maritime theme into them.
 
Art Attack! (Gr. 1-8) - Connected to a UK television show, this site provides directions and “how to?” tutorials for a variety of art/craft projects.  Each step of a project includes a photograph along with a description.  There is also a sharing gallery provided for teachers to upload student work.
 
Colour Lovers (Gr. 6-12) - In the real world, people are PAID to create and "forecast" new color palettes.  These color designers create new schemes for businesses in architecture, advertising, web design and more.  Many examples of "analogous and complementary" color schemes came be found.
 
Earth Album (Gr. K-12) - This site harnesses the power of Flickr (a digital picture archive) and Google Maps toe create an interactive world map.  To start, click on an area of interest and photos will be displayed.  Click on any photos to see a larger version, often with a write-up about a the picture and where it was taken.  NOTE: Because photos from Flickr are contributed by the general public, it is recommended that you preview possible locations prior to using them with students.
 
http://www.jacksonpollock.org/ (Gr. K-12) - Don’t be fooled by the apparent blank screen, this interactive site is just plain fun.  Simply move your cursor around to see the affect and change your color with a simple click of the mouse.  Use with an IWB and have students “paint” with their fingers.  Combine this site with music and explore how it influences visual expression.
 
The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Explore/Learn (Gr. 3-12) - A “gateway” to fun and learning at this well known museum.  Designed around popular and collections of art, this virtual field trip grants access to interactive activities and scavenger hunts, worksheets, commentary and other resources for both students and staff.
 
Mr. Young’s Bouncy “A” (Gr. K-5) - Don’t be fooled by the title, this site is full of interactive resources on a wide variety of topics.  Start by selecting a content area then choose a specific topic area such as biology, money, map skills, words & sentences, photography, instruments, computers, careers and more.
 
Origami Now! (Gr. 3-9) - An excellent instructional site for learning the Japanese art of origami.  Choose from up to seven instructional videos varying in difficulty from Beginner to Expert.  Learn how to make the jumping frog, the puppy dog or the challenging butterfly.
 
The Periodic Table Printmaking Project (Gr. 7-12) - The elements of the Periodic Table meets art.  Each element is showcased by individual artwork from 96 printmakers from eight different countries and 29 states.  Each element, when clicked on, provides scientific information such as symbol, atomic weight and number.  Each element also provides information about the printmaker and media used such as woodcut, linocut, etching, silkscreen and more.
 
Project Draw (Gr. 5-12) - An interactive site providing various drawing tools for use with geometry, science, engineering and other technical topics.  The drawing is based on mathematical formulas (not pixels) making the sketches much more precise.  Some of the more advanced features require membership which is free.
 
Sketchfu (Gr. 6-12) - For the adventurous technology user, this site allows you to create basic (or elaborate) drawings and then share them as an animated movie.  The drawing tools are very simple and if you create a free account with the site you can publish your art.  The site is designed as a "social drawing space" where users can share and view others' work.
 
Timeline of Art History (Gr. 6-12) - From the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this site organizes vast amounts of information into themes, timelines, geographical regions and by traditional artist/subject.  This makes it easy to pull in information and pictures relating to whatever topic your teaching.
 
Typogenerator (Gr. 1-12) - A simple online tool that combines art with text to create a pattern of repeating colors and “echoes” of the text entered.  Enter a word or words into the text box and then click “generate.”  The tool then goes out and searches Google for images to help it generate your artistic image.  NOTE:  images created with this site may be subject to copyright.
 
Universal Leonardo (Gr. 6-12) - Study history, art, math and science and show how all of these topics can interact with each other by looking at the life of Leonardo da Vinci.  Through interactive skill challenges and games, learn about the many inventions Leonardo dreamed up, the art he produced and his studies of the human body and the natural world.
 
Viscosity (Gr. 2-12) - An online art generator allowing students to create their own masterpieces.  Use the web-based tools to move, smudge, swirl, sweep and moosh within a series of color schemes.  Click the Save button when done to post the work to the website.  Once published, click on your masterpiece to download or click “Watch” to see your masterpiece combined with others into an animated slideshow.  Flash required.
 
Wotartist (Gr. 6-12) - An extensive listing of artist web sites that allows you to search for an artist by continent or medium.  Artists with web sites of their own will also be listed.  The site has great examples of art styles including:  photography, sculpture, impressionism and more.

2008 Olympics in Beijing (Gr. K-12) - Official site for information on the 2008 Olympics (August 8-24) and associated activities and venues.  Find information on past Olympic events, interactive Olympic games and fun foreign language activities.
 
ARKive Education Games (Gr. 2-10) - An "eclectic mix" of interactive Flash games on topics ranging from science to language arts.  Please note that some of the activities have more educational value than others and that there may be some spelling differences due to the sites' British creators.
 
Internet & Cyber Safety (Gr. 6-8) - From Kids.gov, a listing of interactive sites that look at how to be safe and secure while still having fun on the Internet.

Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (Gr. K-12) - Maine Ag. in the classroom is a site connecting information on farms and farming taking place all across the state with the public.  There are lesson plan resources for teachers and sections for elementary and secondary students.  Student pages contain links to virtual tours and interactive activities on a variety of topics including dairy farms, if Earth was an apple, science fair ideas and more.

P.A.C.E. Trek 2008 (Gr. K-12) - An interactive site that challenges students to get fit and become more informed about staying healthy.  Taking place each spring, Paul Staso leads this project by running solo across the continental United States.  While students log their mileage with the website, Paul will communicate with them on topics including healthy eating, physical fitness and even a little geography!
 
Visible Body (Gr. 6-12) - A comprehensive, high-detail, 3-D interactive interface for examining the various layers, structures, and processes that take place in the human body.  NOTE:  While the site is free, registration is required to access the program.  There is also no G-rated version available, but it is pending.
 
 
Bullying
Anti-Bullying Network (Gr. 6-12) - In this site designed for upper classmen, read scenarios and events regarding bullying from different points view.  Read how these fictional students think, feel, and reflect on various social events they encounter.
 
BBC Specials: Bullying  (Gr. K-8) - "This site addresses the important issue of bullying. It includes an interactive video, reports, information guides, quizzes, polls, and more. This site also talks about the less frequently discussed forms of bullying - such as cyber bullying, girls bullying girls, cellular phone bullying and other less "traditional" forms of bullying (which unfortunately are becoming more common)." ~TeachersFirst.com
 
Kids Against Bullying (Gr. 1-8) - Follow Sally in this interactive site containing games, student and celebrity videos, polls and and surveys where kids ask the questions.
 
 
Cyber Safety
Buddy Builder (Gr. 5-12) - (Federal Trade Commission) - Here's a new game that quizzes players on their online social networking practices and offers tips to help keep you safe online. In the game, players move through different rounds by correctly reacting to common requests found on social networking sites.
 
Hector's World (Gr. K-5) - This interactive site includes interactive movies, lesson plans, downloadable materials and more that discuss Internet Safety in a way that elementary students will understand.  Note that there may be some differences in the sites' audio and spelling due to these parts being produced in New Zealand (perhaps an opportunity for a little geography lesson?).
 
Hoax or Not? (Gr. 5-8) - This web quest asks students to consider how authentic and "believable" information they find on the Internet really is.  Students will study given sites to help them determine if information is fact or fiction.  A creative writing activity is the final project.  Artifacts provided include a KWL chart, web site rating checklist and a final project rubric and tutorial.
 
iKeepSafe.org (Gr. 1-5) - Follow the adventures of Faux Paw, the Techno Cat and learn about Internet safety and ethics
 
OnGuard Online (Gr. 6-12) - A great compilation of resources for staying cyber-safe while out cruising on the Internet.  Learn how to spot scams, what to do if you’re being cyber-bullied and how to be a safe social networker.  Read up on online shopping, investing online, laptops security, phishing and more.  Flash is required for this site.
 
 
Healthy Bodies
Alcohol Advertising & Awareness (Gr. 4-12) - This site has several components to it, but the overall theme is helping students be safe and make informed decisions.  Take the alcohol awareness interactive quiz to learn about the advertising market, join the CyberPigs as they learn CyberSense when using the Internet, investigate food advertising and more.
 
Agriculture in the Classroom (Gr. 1-12) - Find several virtual classrooms in the site such as "The Story of Milk", "4-H Virtual Farm" and Science in a Shopping Cart.  Check out the "Teen Scene" for older students or "The Kids Zone" for elementary students.
 
Dole 5 A Day (Gr. K-5) - Includes facts, games, and a reference center.

Nutrition Sleuth (Gr. 1-5) - As Inspector Snarfengood, you must find the missing nutrients that make foods healthy.

Mnemograph: Online Timeline Creator (Gr. 7-12) - This site allows users to create their own interactive timelines on any topic of their choosing.  When complete, users can zoom in and view the timeline from anywhere between a 3-hour view up to 600 years.  Users must create an account in order to use the tool, but sign up is FREE.

Video in the Classroom.com (Gr. K-5) - Made by kids for kids, this site contains video productions put together by elementary school students.  Videos are a combination of slide show and actual video footage.  Students discuss topics such as animal camouflage, story telling, and the use of imagination.  When watching the videos, think of how you might integrate pictures/illustrations with voice-overs as a way to tell a story in a digital way.
 
 
Foreign Language
Francais Interactif | Interactive French (Gr. 6-12) - Put together by students and faculty from the University of Texas at Austin, this highly interactive site documents a group of students visiting Lyon, France and their experiences learning the French language.  Site includes video and audio segments, vocabulary and grammar topics, web-based quizzes, and pictures throughout the site.  Students can also download or subscribe to the available  RSS feed via iTunes.  Quicktime is required for this site.
 
howjsay.com (Gr. 3-12) - An English pronunciation site with over 76,000 words in its database and still growing.  Enter a word or phrase in the box provided and the system will analyze the entry.  Then, simply roll your pointer over the pink lettering the the system will read the word or phrase out loud in English.  If there is a difference between British and American pronunciations the system will provide both.
 
Inspiration Lane (Gr. 4-12) - This newspaper-style blog has daily entries for "Quote of the Day," "This Day in History," "Today's English Lesson" and more.  Because this site can be translated into NINE different languages including French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and even Arabic, ESL students may find it of particular interest.  A great source for current events and discussion starters within the classroom.
 

Latin Flash Dash (Gr. 7-12) – This site tests student knowledge and understanding of Latin vocabulary.  There are three challenge levels, three books, and 32 chapters of difficulty.

 
Lingro (Gr. 2-12) - Enter the URL of any web page into Lingro, watch as the original website loads, and now all of the words on that page are “clickable” for definitions and even translation.  Clicking a word provides the definition and classification (noun, verb, adjective, etc.).  After clicking a word, use the flag icons in the top left of the window to translate it into one of six languages.  NOTE: text displayed via Flash cannot be seen by Lingro and won’t be available for defining/translating.
 
Mango Languages (Gr. 3-12) - An online language learning system free to everyone (with registration).  Lessons and exercises include conversations, translation practice, native speaker recordings, phonetic pronunciations and more.  An attractive project for gift & talented students and/or for independent study projects.  NOTE:  The site is still in beta testing, but new features are being added and current ones are constantly being refined.
 
Primary French (Gr. 2-6) - This highly animated site will excite students in learning some basic words and phrases in French.  The cartoons speak with child voices and address topics including numbers, greetings, age and more.  Site requires Flash.
 
Scholastic Student Activities (Gr. K-5) - A wealth of interactive activities can be found here including interactive storybooks, matching games, vocabulary building, learning games, videos and more.  Choose from five content areas:  language arts, math, science, social studies and Spanish.
 

Visual ESL.com (Gr. 1-8) – This interactive site asks students to drag-n-drop vocabulary words to the corresponding pictures.  There is also a grammar section but it doesn’t contain any interactive components.  NOTE: some advertisements are on the page, but are text-only.

 
Vocabulix (Gr. 3-12) - A free site, Vocabulix supports students learning Spanish, German and English as a Second Language (ESL).  The site helps student with pronunciation (the site speaks) as well as verb tense and conjugation.  Teachers: if you create a FREE login account, you will gain access to a lesson-creation feature.  The site hopes to add other languages to its service soon.
 
 
Poetry & Rhyme
English Renaissance Drama (Gr. 9-12) - A great website that looks at the many playwrights and creators of drama that existed before, during and after the time of William Shakespeare.  Looking at the Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, each profile was contributed by professors and contain links with explanations, allusions and other bits of information.  A wealth of information to be found all in one place.
 
The Interactive Raven (Gr. 5-10) - Use Edgar Allen Poe's famous poem to learn about the word devices he uses such as: alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme and other vocabulary words.
 
Kids' Poetry Page (Gr. 2-8) - Choose from several themes and then create your own poems using the virtual word magnets.
 
Nursery Rhymes (Gr. K-3) - A listing of popular rhymes with most having a copy of the music in midi format for you to listen to.  A great activity for a center or cooperative group activity.
 
Wizards & Pigs Poetry Pickle (Gr. 2-6) - Travel through a strange world and discover different types of poetry.
 
 
Reading
Aesop Fables (Gr. K-5) - A collection of four animated fables.  Each fable is animated and read aloud and ends with a lesson to remember.
 
Audio Stories for Children (Gr. K-5) - Chuck Brown, the host of Light Up Your Brain, has generously lent his voice to reading classic stories and fairy-tales and posting the audio clips online for FREE.  Listen to the story of Peter Rabbit, The Emperor’s New Clothes The Littler Mermaid and more!  Use an IWB and have students create illustrations while they listen to the story.
 
Book 'Em! Sequence Game (Gr. K-3) - Learn how books are made
 
BookPALS (Gr. K-5) - Storyline Online Reading, where celebrities sit down and read various children's books in a "Reading Rainbow" format.
 
Browser Books (Gr. K-2) - It's like having a second reading teacher in your classroom.  Students can choose a book from the index or teachers can choose from 10 different reading levels or by subject.  Once in a story, students may click on any word to hear it read aloud.  This site would definitely be a hit on an interactive whiteboard.

Junie B. Jones (Gr. 1-5) - Find games, activities, downloadable worksheets and an about-the-author section in this site.
 
Leveled Books Database (Gr. K-6) - Type in a book title and the database will return level information with respect to guided reading, accelerated reader and/or Reading Recovery.
 
Lil’ Fingers (Gr. K-1) - This free interactive site has activities/resources with pre-school and kindergartners in mind.  Find activities and games on storybooks, coloring sheets, learning the alphabet, telling time and more.  Flash is required for this site.
 
Little Critter World-Wide Network (Gr. K-3) - Created by author Mercer Mayer, find a wealth of interactive activities in the site including read & plays, sing-a-longs, games, videos and more!
 
Lookybook (Gr. K-5) - Preview picture and other children's books from this site. Search for a book by keyword, author, illustrator, subject or genre, then virtually open the book of your choosing and peruse each page of the story.
 
Loud Lit (Gr. 1-12) - A literature website for “your ears and eyes” with content in poetry, novels, classic children’s literature, short stories and even some historical items.  Choose between listening to the literature or listening and reading the literature online.  You also have the option of downloading the items to a portable MP3 player and taking the literature “on the road.”  The site is constantly adding to its archive of literature.
 
Proverbia.net (Gr. 3-12) - A wonderfully rich resource of quotes and proverbs for use on bulletin boards, quotes of the day and a handy tool for teaching figurative language and idioms.  The sites allows you to search alphabetically, by topic or by author.  Look to the top-right of the site to turn on the Spanish version.

Robert Munsch Virtual Story Room (Gr. K-5) - Access over 40 online stories from this author.  Choose from list of story titles and then click the download button.  Stories should play on standard Windows and Mac mp3 players.

SillyBooks.net (Gr. K-6) - Don’t let the name fool you, this site offers and extensive list of animated books with audio in English and in some cases Spanish too.  Many of the books display the text during the read aloud, and others highlight the vocabulary as it is being read.  A definite addition to one’s web favorites/bookmarks.  Flash is required for this site.
 

Spider-Man in Amazing Adventures (Gr. 5-9) – Spider-Man is here to lead the way in learning about reading and writing.  At first the activities look like simple worksheets, but integrate with a SMART Board and now you have interactive resources for group-based activities.

 
StarFall (Gr. K-6) - A great interactive website that uses phonics to teach spelling and reading.
 
Storynory Kids Audio Stories (Gr. K-5) - An impressive listing of over 100 audio stories available for download as MP3 files.  Find fairy-tales, modern stories, Brothers Grimm, Hans Chirstian Anderson, poems, Greek myths, animal stories, Aesop and more!  The listing is being constantly updated, so check back often.  Most stories are provided in text form as well, so students can follow along while listening.  Subscribe to the site via iTunes and get updates automatically downloaded to your computer or MP3 player.

U.S. Presidential Speeches Tag Cloud (Gr. 9-12) - Show students the changes in presidential politics and policy over the decades using this site.  The "tag cloud" demonstrates visually how often words have been used in presidential speeches and how certain words became popular during one era and then faded away later on (i.e., when does the word "terrorism" begin to be used more frequently).  The timeline stretches from the present day all the way back to 1776, and shows who was in office at the time.
 
Word Games (Gr. 2-12) - This site contains many "mind stretching" interactive games for students to engage in.  Try your luck against the computer in DefineTime or battle for control of the board in SwitchWord.  Each game provides directions on how to play and the purpose for the activity.
 
Zipskinny (Gr. 6-12) - Based on information from the year 2000 census, students can look up information on any community in the country simply by entering a zip code.  Find statistical data on education, income, race, gender and more on each U.S. community.  NOTE:  The data is based on the 2000 census and may be outdated.

Interactives:  Elements of a Story (Gr. 1-5) - “A good story is like tasty soup.”  This interactive site uses the story of Cinderella to teach students the elements of a good story:  setting, characters, sequence, exposition, conflict, climax and resolution.  After providing examples, the site challenges students to create a story of their own based on what they’ve learned.
 
Literary Visions (Gr. 9-12) - Access streaming video on up to 24 aspects of literature from a variety of experts.  Topics include poetry, short fiction, drama, essay and more.  Access to the streaming video requires registration with the site but this is free.  Unfortunately, videos cannot be downloaded but can be purchased on DVD.

K-12) - This free site allows you to create your own jigsaw puzzles from any image you want.  Upload your picture (must be a JPEG file) and select a name.  Click on the “Advanced Setting” link to customize the difficulty of the puzzle.  Click Create when ready.  Use the “More” option to generate a link to your puzzle that can then be shared with others.
 
Maine Agriculture in the Classroom (Gr. K-12) - Maine Ag. in the classroom is a site connecting information on farms and farming taking place all across the state with the public.  There are lesson plan resources for teachers and sections for elementary and secondary students.  Student pages contain links to virtual tours and interactive activities on a variety of topics including dairy farms, if Earth was an apple, science fair ideas and more.
 
Mnemograph: Online Timeline Creator (Gr. 7-12) - This site allows users to create their own interactive timelines on any topic of their choosing.  When complete, users can zoom in and view the timeline from anywhere between a 3-hour view up to 600 years.  Users must create an account in order to use the tool, but sign up is FREE.
 
Mr. Young’s Bouncy “A” (Gr. K-5) - Don’t be fooled by the title, this site is full of interactive resources on a wide variety of topics.  Start by selecting a content area then choose a specific topic area such as biology, money, map skills, words & sentences, photography, instruments, computers, careers and more.

Serengeti Photo Safari (Gr. 3-8) - Hop in your jeep and try to photograph all of the animals living on the Serengeti plain before dark.  Watch a movie of your adventure at the end!
 
Squeak, Rattle, and Roar! (Gr. 1-5) - Learn how animals communicate.
 
Switch Zoo (Gr. 1-4) - Learn about various animals and their habitats by allowing students to use their "creative juices" to make new and interesting animals.  Combine features from a zebra, rhino and pig into a completely new and unique animal.  Directions are pretty straight forward but there is a "How to Play" link if more direction is needed.  Use the "Title" and "Story" feature for a creative writing assignment.

Build a Bridge (Gr. 4-8) - This PBS activity introduces students to bridges and bridge design.  After students read about the locations they have been assigned to construct bridges at and their bridge choices, there is a short interactive matching activity.  This is an extensive listing of additional resources at the end of the activity.
 
Building Big (Gr. 6-12) - Based on the television show on PBS, this site has fantastic activities, lessons and labs for students to explore.  Choose from five engineering projects:  bridges, domes, skyscrapers, tunnels and dams.  Also included are vocabulary definitions, a searchable structures database, career-development content and virtual lab experiments.
 
How Products Are Made (Gr. 5-12) - This database site contains thousands of products, many students will find they use everyday.  Choose a volume number and then search the alphabetized list for a product on interest.  You can also use the search field at the bottom of the page.  Also found on the start page is a alphabetical listing of inventors and their inventions.
 
Project Draw (Gr. 5-12) - An interactive site providing various drawing tools for use with geometry, science, engineering and other technical topics.  The drawing is based on mathematical formulas (not pixels) making the sketches much more precise.  Some of the more advanced features require membership which is free.
 
Red Bull Flugtag Flight Lab (Gr. 6-12) - Students will be challenged to create, construct, decorate and then fly their own flying machines.  Students will need to think about weight when choose a material to cut from, aerodynamics when designed the plane body and wings and finally conducting test flights with their aircraft.  Flying isn’t easy, and students will investigate how easy or hard it is to control their aircraft due to their design.
 
SEPUP's Car Comparison (Gr. 5-8) - Students must build a virtual car and then race them on a virtual rack track.  Students need to consider tire type, average miles per gallon, engine type and body frame.  Apply the scientific method to find which combinations of components will make the best car.

Copse and Robbers (Gr. 3-8) - From ARKive Education, students are tested on their investigative skills to solve a “kid-friendly” murder case, a wood pigeon.  Students will scour the crime scene for clues, investigate suspects and analyze the evidence collected.  Many of the skills associated with scientific investigation are embedded throughout the activity.
 
Design a Habitat (Gr. 3-9) - Students need to help the black-footed ferret, a mammal on the endangered species list, find a place to live.  Their task is to create a habitat in which the ferret can safely eat, sleep and by happy.  An understanding of the different biomes and habitats will be important to this mission.
 
ID-Fit (Gr. 3-8) - This challenging site in forensics asks students to recreate a suspect's face.  Compare/control features such as hair, eyes, nose and mouth.  The challenge comes from the original photo being constantly distorted due to interference, not to mention limited amount of time to complete the task.
 
Science of Baseball (Gr. 4-10) - A collection of activities that look at physics, biomechanics and baseball.  Find answers to questions about how a ball curves when thrown, how fast does a batter have to react to hit a 95 miles per hour ball and more.  Flash is required for this site.

Hyper History Online (Gr. 6-12) - This site is a comprehensive collection of timelines with "over 3000 years of history".  The timelines are layered, allowing for easier compare and contrasting of events that occurred in different places around the globe.  Elements within each timeline are "clickable" and will display additional information about the entry on the right side of the window.  The site is recommended for upper level students due to the sheer magnitude of the information available.
 
Images of American Political History (Gr. 5-12) - An archive of black-and-white photographs and illustrations of people and events from American history and politics.  Search the archive by keyword, topic or era.  Because the images are in the “Public Domain” they are copyright-free and open to anyone to use.

The Cave of Lascaux (Gr. 6-12) - "In 1940, four teenagers discovered a cave full of cave writings, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. This site takes the viewer into the cave to discover it for themselves, which is the only way to see the caves since the cave had to be closed in 1963 due to oxidation of the drawings from human viewing."
 
The Cultures and History of America (Gr. 6-12) - From the Library of Congress, this site brings artifacts and stories from America's past to life.  Take a 3-D tour of a Mayan Tortuguero box or a 17th century book, The Buccaneers of America that allows you to literally turn the pages of the book while listening to an audio translation of the text.  The site also includes resources on Francis Drake and indigenous people of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.  This site requires Flash.
 
Quest for Immortality: Treasures of Ancient Egypt (Gr. 6-12) - This site contains stunning images and video about this time in history.  Access narrated slide shows (RealPlayer required), video presentations and important vocabulary throughout the site.
 
Secrets of the Pharaohs (Gr. 6-12) -  Created by PBS online, students can go and take a 3-D tour of the Great Pyramid and go step-by-step through the mummification process.  Learn how DNA is used to reveal mummy secrets or explore the "impressive" interactive maps of the region.
 
 
Colonial America
Be A Historian: Immigration (Gr. 4-10) - Travel back in time to the 1800's and see immigration in America.  While the setting for this activity is Waterloo, Iowa the information provides insight into American immigration in general.  The site contains 10 activities, most of which are interactive and also provide summaries, answer keys, and extension activities that can be printed off.
 
Jamestown Rediscovery (Gr. 3-8) - Get up-to-date information about the ongoing projects taking place at the original Jamestown site. Read historical accounts, take a virtual tour of the excavation site and view artifacts recovered from the digs.
 
The First Thanksgiving (Gr. 2-8) - You are the historian and your job is to investigate the First Thanksgiving.  Along the way look for Dancing Hawk and Sarah who will give you helpful tips and directions during your journey.
 
The Voyages of Christopher Columbus (Gr. 3-8) - An interactive map that shows the four voyages Columbus made to the new world.  Important places and events that took place during the voyages are highlighted on the screen.

Middle East Interactive Activities (Gr. 3-8) - Contains three interactive activities that can be used with an interactive whiteboard or on individual computers.  The activities test student knowledge of the regions by quizzing them on country names, locations and other important facts.
 
Time for Kids: India (Gr. 3-7) - Take virtual tour of India with interactive maps, timeline, sightseeing guide, an array of images, online assessment and more.  Find lesson plans, worksheets, maps and organizers for print off on the site.

2008 Presidential Election: Interactive Map (Gr. 6-12) - This interactive site will help students understand how the Electoral College process works.  Clicking on a state displays voting history and other facts at the bottom of the screen.  Use the “Select the Year” feature to look at the vote turnout from elections going all the way back to 1789.
 
Biographical Dictionary (Gr. 3-12) - This wiki dictionary includes “more than 33,000 biographies on men and women from ancient times to today.”  Search by various categories including birth/death dates, profession, achievements, name or keyword.  NOTE: Due to the unknown authorship that comes with a wiki site, remind students that the information should be verified by other “scholarly” site when using for a research project.
 
Foreign War and Domestic Freedom (Gr. 9-12) - This lesson plan developed by PBS exposes students to the history and ongoing debates on civil liberties.  Of greatest value are the additional resources provided by the site that include: a PowerPoint on civil liberties, an animated clip on civil liberties and their affect on society, a timeline of restrictions and more. s
 
NPR: Election 2008 (Gr. 6-12)  A well-organized site with information on primaries, caucuses and delegate distributions.  Use the interactive map to see how both Democratic and Republican candidates have faired or are fairing in any of the 50 states.
 
On the Road: The Great Career Journey (Gr. 6-12) - This sites allows students to examine/evaluate their values, interests, and goals to help them begin thinking about careers and career paths.  With Flash enabled, animated tips are shown regarding skills, creativity, leadership, and more.  Students can "match up" careers with groups of similar values and skills.  Please note that there may be slight differences in spelling and vocabulary due to the site being produced in British Columbia.
 
Owen & Mzee (Gr. 1-8) - Follow the adventures of Owen and Mzee, a hippo and a 130-year old tortoise.  Along with their friends, explore their world which is full of sound clips, photographs, documentary videos and more.  The goal of this site is “to teach acceptance, resilience, diversity, language and the African culture.”
 
Savings Quest (Gr. 5-9) - Put students into the drivers seat of life with this interactive site.  Similar to the game of LIFE, students create a character, choose a career, then perform tasks in order to receive a paycheck.  They must then pay bills and account for unexpected expenses, all the while trying to save enough money for a “big ticket” item at the end of the 6 months (e.g. vacation, computer, car).  A great tool to expose students to the real world of money, budgets and goal-setting.  Flash required.
 
 
Geography
Earth Album (Gr. K-12) - This site harnesses the power of Flickr (a digital picture archive) and Google Maps toe create an interactive world map.  To start, click on an area of interest and photos will be displayed.  Click on any photos to see a larger version, often with a write-up about a the picture and where it was taken.  NOTE: Because photos from Flickr are contributed by the general public, it is recommended that you preview possible locations prior to using them with students.
 
The Geography Zone (Gr. 6-12) - The ongoing, online interactive game challenges students to demonstrate their knowledge of geography facts.  Represent your country, state or province and track your progress and score.  Students may play without signing up, but membership is free.

Maps and Directions (Gr. K-5) - Hidden beyond this bland title page are a wealth of interactive Flash activities for students to enjoy.  Some of the activities listed include spatial relations, compass directions, using a grid, scales and more.  In addition to the interactive games there are handouts available for print out.
 
National Atlas (Gr. 2-12) - In addition to traditional maps, students can find information in the areas of agriculture, biology, climate, government, history, transportation, water and more.  The actual map features are quite spectacular and some are even interactive and display information on relief and elevation, volcanoes and more.
 
Using Latitude and Longitude (Gr. 3-8) - Created by a teacher, this excellent website looks to teach students these concepts through kid-friendly graphics, helpful analogies for difficult concepts, assessment quizzes and more.
 
Quizzim's Can You Read a Map? (Gr. 2-5) - This quick interactive activity is a great follow-up to a lesson on map skills.  Students must analyze a grid map and demonstrate an understanding of the compass directions.
 
 
Government

The Road to the Capital (Gr. 6-12) - This unbelievable site asks students to take on the role of a U.S. Congress candidate.  The opponent, Roberta Glass, is trying to limit children’s freedoms with respect to CD’s, video games, music and other electronics.  Students must visit various places and events while trying to gain votes.  At each location they will need to answer various questions pertaining to the constitution, history, civil rights and more.  NOTE: each location offers a place to review and acquire background information in preparation of the questions.  Downloadable guides for teachers and parents are also available.  Flash required.

U.S. Presidential Speeches Tag Cloud (Gr. 9-12) - Show students the changes in presidential politics and policy over the decades using this site.  The "tag cloud" demonstrates visually how often words have been used in presidential speeches and how certain words became popular during one era and then faded away later on (i.e., when does the word "terrorism" begin to be used more frequently).  The timeline stretches from the present day all the way back to 1776, and shows who was in office at the time.

English Renaissance Drama (Gr. 9-12) - A great website that looks at the many playwrights and creators of drama that existed before, during and after the time of William Shakespeare.  Looking at the Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, each profile was contributed by professors and contain links with explanations, allusions and other bits of information.  A wealth of information to be found all in one place.
 
How Products Are Made (Gr. 5-12) - This database site contains thousands of products, many students will find they use everyday.  Choose a volume number and then search the alphabetized list for a product on interest.  You can also use the search field at the bottom of the page.  Also found on the start page is a alphabetical listing of inventors and their inventions.
 
Invention Connection (Gr. 4-10) - Students must "connect the dots" and trace the paths and interconnections of many inventions.  Students learn how inventions are connected and how they helped one another to create the tools we use today.  This activity can be played over and over again, with the beginning (A) and end (B) invention points changing each time.  NOTE:  The text portions may require some explanation for younger students.
 
Universal Leonardo (Gr. 6-12) - Study history, art, math and science and show how all of these topics can interact with each other by looking at the life of Leonardo da Vinci.  Through interactive skill challenges and games, learn about the many inventions Leonardo dreamed up, the art he produced and his studies of the human body and the natural world.

Martin Luther King Papers Project (Gr. 6-12) - The Stanford collection is one of the most complete biographical collections on Dr. King and the work he did.  Timelines, digital copies of original documents, study aids and lesson plans have all been made accessible.

NMAAHC (Gr. 6-12) - The National Museum of African American History and Culture doesn't exist physically, yet.  Until the projected opening of the museum in 2015, the creators have done a lot of work to make the virtual museum as comprehensive and information-rich as possible.  Learn about historical figures and connections between various issues.  Access traditional lesson plans and an interactive timeline.
