May News

It was a great day welcoming students back after April vacation.  There was a lot of high energy in the room as students were very excited to see one another and get back into the school routine.  We continue to work on our life cycle science unit where we have plants growing in the class and we are awaiting our shipment of painted lady caterpillars.  We will do a two week unit on Earth Day and talk about things children can do to help the earth.  We will talk about shutting off lights and T.V. when you leave a room, picking up your litter, shutting off the water when you brush your teeth, planting flowers and trees to make the world more beautiful, etc. This dovetails very nicely with a core literature book called Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney.  This book is about a woman in Maine called the “Lupine Lady” that spread lupine seeds around Maine to make the world a better place.  After that we will have a visit from another Maine author, Lynn Plourde.  She will read some of her books, talk about what it takes to write a book and then talk to the students about writing.  We will then spend some time on rocks.  If anyone has knowledge they would like to share about rocks or gems, please send me a note and we would love to have you.  Also, if you haven’t come in to talk about a country of your choice, let me know and we will fit that in, as well.

Thank you!

I would like to thank everyone for everything that you have done lately and throughout the year to help.  All I have had to do was ask and I have had parents helping in any way that they could.  When I have needed supplies, you have made a donation to the class.  Parents have helped at home, for example when we needed play doh, you made play doh.  When we needed chaperones on our field trips, I had to turn parents away because I had so many.  When the accreditation team came to visit, my room was so tidy thanks to your help.  Another parent comes in and reads with students.  Thank you for helping in whichever way that you were able.  It is much appreciated.

Student Placement

Computer

It was great to meet with you all at conference time.  I feltl a bit nervous at fall conferences when we are just getting to know one another but in the spring, I feel like I meet with friends.  I will sadly have to let the second graders move at the end of this year.  I will be putting a lot of thought into placement.  I have your thoughts and I will be carefully looking at the class makeup and taking your suggestions into the mix.  There is so much to consider.  I am excited to have the first graders back.  They will be my leaders next year and this should boost their self-esteem and their attitudes about school.  I am available for tutoring over the summer. Send me a note if you are interested and we can talk about the details.  Even though the spring gets busy with activities, please make sure your child keeps reading.  Thank you!
