Parents;

The third grade and multiage class have three important events coming up before the end of school.  Here is an explanation of each event and a permission slip on the bottom.

Students will be exposed to different kinds of poetry in the class and then they will pick out a poem and memorize it.  Then all students in multiage and grade three will recite these poems in the gym at Consolidated.  Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30 is Poetry Night.  We tried to find a date that did not interfere with any other activity at M.S.A.D. #71 and were successful in that regard.  We have no idea of your child’s sports schedule and it may conflict with some game or practice but we do hope that you all can make it.

Wednesday, June 7th from 8:30-2:15 we will have a field trip to the Portland Observatory and the Portland Museum of Art.  The Portland Portland ObservatoryObservatory is not a lighthouse! (And it has nothing to do with astronomy.) The Portland Observatory (1807) is the only extant maritime signal station in the United States, and thus a unique architectural icon of maritime shipping and the "Golden Age of Sail." The Portland Observatory was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and became a National Historic Landmark in 2006. The cost for students is $2.00 and the cost for chaperones is $3.00

Students will look at artifacts to understand more about Portland and its roots as a maritime community.  They will also understand why Portland developed as a city.  If time permits, we will try to squeeze in a visit to an old cemetery that is near the Observatory.

Students will have to bring a bag lunch and a drink.  Please NO GLASS BOTTLES!  We will have lunch, weather permitting, on the Eastern Promenade.

After that we will go to the Portland Museum of Art to be introduced to an art museum.  A benefactor of the art museum has paid for all school children that are visiting the art museum this year so there is no charge for the students.  We have a limit to the amount of chaperones for this trip and no siblings are allowed to go on this field trip.

On Tuesday, June 13th we have a field trip to Maine Wildlife Park in Gray, ME from 8:30-2:15.  This will be the culminating field trip of our study of biomes and endangered animals and will also compare and contrast the life cycle and behavior of some of these animals and describe the food web.  We will have a presentation called “What’s Legal, What’s Not” which makes students better stewards of the animals and plants in our state.  There are a limited number of seats for chaperones on the bus but you are welcome to take their own car or carpool..  The cost for students and chaperones is $3.50.  Please remember a bag lunch and a drink for this field trip also.   Please NO GLASS BOTTLES

The last day of school is Wednesday, June 14th and it is a half day of school. We have only been on one field trip prior to this but we have lots of exciting things to look forward to before school ends!  Hope to see you at one of these events if not all of them!   Please sign the attached permission slip with the total fees of $5.50 by May 18th.                                                                                                              Thank you, Carol and Nancy
