Art Foundations is a full year course that is designed for students in grades 9-12. All students wishing to take upper level and/or semester art courses are required to successfully complete one full year of a Foundations level art class. Each student enrolled in a Foundations class will learn the key concepts of Composition and the Elements of Art. This body of information will serve as the basis for all lessons that will include 2D and 3D design, Art History and Criticism/Aesthetics. Through exposure to a multitude of materials and processes, students will be expected to apply their knowledge and understanding of these concepts within the framework of specific lessons. It is important for the student in art to be able to communicate his/her understanding of the Elements and Composition both verbally and visually. In addition, because it is a goal of the department to guide each student toward finding his or her own unique, individual creativity we strongly emphasize originality in all works of art. Art media to be explored will include but not limited to painting, printmaking, pottery, plaster, pen and ink, pencil, oil pastel and colored pencil drawing.
