ADVISORY

IB Learner Profile

Objective:
"
The purpose of advisory is to assure that every student belongs to a small peer group attended by an adult mentor. Building upon a foundation of biweekly meetings, the goal is to create a sense of belonging to the school, the team, and the advisory group." (MSK Handbook, p. 3)

What happens during Advisory:
"
Advisors function as mentors, helping each of their advisees be successful.  Individual goal setting, time management, organizational skills and academic advising lie at the heart of the program.  Additional time is spent on monthly themes which include respect, team building, asset building, recognizing diversity, character education, healthy lifestyles, and reaching out to the community. Advisors tend to be the adults who know the student best.  They provide the vital home-school communication link." (MSK Handbook, p. 3)

Student-led conferences
Students will lead conferences with their parents by using a portfolio collection of their work.  In each portfolio will be samples of exemplary work and samples of work in progress.  The collection of work which meets the Maine Guiding Principles and Learning Results will also be a focus of advisory.

Goal-Setting
"People with goals succeed, because they know where they're going." --Earl Nightingate

The Five Conditions of Goal Setting
A good goal is.
..
Conceivable:  It tells exactly what you intend to achieve.
Possible:  It states something that could really happen.
Controllable:  It describes something you have control over.
Measurable:  It provides ways to measure if it has been achieved.
Definable:  It includes only one alternative.

2.Write it down.
3. Be sure the goal contains all five conditions.
4. List the things you need to reach your goal.
