LAPTOP GUIDELINES

 SEVENTH GRADE

General Information:

v        The Apple iBook and carrying case issued to you is the property of the State of Maine, registered to The Middle School of the Kennebunks. They are assigned to the student.

v        Teachers will have administrative controls so that at any time a teacher may "look" at what a student has on his/her computer and may actually freeze it or even "take over" the student's computer.

v        The issuance of an iBook to each student is a privilege, not a right. This privilege can be revoked.

v        The MLTI(Maine Learning Technology Initiative) is about teaching and learning. The laptop will be a tool that can take students to a higher level of overall educational literacy.

v        A laptop and carrying case will be issued to you during homeroom.

v        Recharging your laptop will take place in your homeroom. This will generally occur during non-instructional time for example, at the end of each school day, school field trips, weekends, and throughout school vacations.

v        Each student’s password is recorded and will be held in confidence among school personnel.  Parents and guardians are entitled to their child’s password.

v        The storage case has a clear display area where you can position your Laptop License. The luggage tag must contain the school’s name, address, and phone number, your first and last name, team name, homeroom teacher’s name and room number.

Care of your laptop:

v        Keep all food and drinks away from your computer.

v        Your laptop should be in your possession or locked in a secure location at all times.  You are responsible for your laptop.

v        Your computer should be clean at all times and appear brand new.  Do not write on it, put stickers on it, etc. Expect regular checkups.

v        Your laptop should only be used within the classroom setting and while at home when signed out. NEVER use on the bus, while in transit, or before/during/after practices, games, and other extracurricular activities.

v        Keep your laptop in its storage case at all times, even while using it.

General Rules, Reminders, and Guidelines:

v        Follow the MSK Student Code of Conduct.

v        Keep passwords confidential.

v        You may not be using your laptop during every class;  please wait for teacher directions.

v        Any inappropriate use or neglectful care of a laptop or its carrying case observed by anyone should be reported immediately and may result in the computer being taken away for a period of time.  Severe incidents may result in the laptop being taken away indefinitely.  Refer to the Student Code of Conduct in the MSK Student Handbook.

v        Do not download anything without teacher permission. All downloads must be documented by the student and teacher of the class for which the download was intended.

v        Always ask permission before printing.

v        Your laptop should never be left unattended (during lunch, in the locker room, before/after school, before, during, or after extracurricular activities, etc.).

v        Don’t stack your laptop on top of or under books.  Always place it on a flat, level surface.

v        When carrying the laptop, be sure it is securely closed.

v        Backup important work to the server through First Class.

v       Remember to recharge your laptop at the end of each school day so that it is ready when you need it.

Internet Rules, Reminders, and Guidelines:

v        The school’s acceptable use policy should be followed at all times. You must have a signed consent form turned in to the school immediately.

v        Your control panel on your computer will be locked. The school has access to your computer at any time to access the control panel to view your Internet history.

v        If you are “accidentally” linked to an inappropriate web site, you should report it immediately. Please close the site, but note the date and time of this accident on the back of your Laptop License.

v        Visiting inappropriate sites may result in a loss of Internet privileges.

E-mail Rules, Reminders, and Guidelines:

v        When working on another computer, you can e-mail assignments between home and school.  Documents are easily transferred between Microsoft Word and Appleworks.

v        The ability to e-mail your peers, teachers, parents, etc. should only be done for educational purposes. E-mails can be monitored.

v        Any inappropriate use of your e-mail may result in your e-mail privileges being taken away for a period of time.

Laptop Permit/License:

v     Once the Laptop Guidelines are signed and returned to MSK, each student will receive a Laptop Permit.  This will enable each student to utilize the laptops while learning about laptop care, practicing saving/printing protocol, and exploring the available applications.

v     After several weeks of instruction, students will be expected to complete a performance assessment to earn their Laptop License.
