Mystery Novel Report Part One: Knowledge-Recalling facts and information 1. Identify the setting of your novel. Remember setting is more than just time and place. Include sensory (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch) details. 10 points 2. Retell the story including eight important events. Explain why the events are important. (10points) Part Two: Character Analysis- Comprehension and Application
3. Complete the attribute web for the main character in your book. (10 points) (This is pictured in your handout. If you don't have it, respond to the following in 1-2 sentences. ) Main Character: How does this character act? What does this character say? How does this character look? (appearance) How does the character feel about himself/herself? What do other characters think of this character? Quote something especially sad or funny that this character said. 4.Select a passage in the book and describe it. Draw two pictures showing what happened before and after the selected passage. Make captions to tell what is in the pictures. (10 points) 5. Using symbolism, classify the central characters as animals or things. Explain why you chose the symbols that you did. Symbol: A symbol is anything that stands for or represents something else. Symbols are usually objects or images that represent ideas. For example, the eagle is often used to represent freedom. The beating heart in Edgar Allen Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart can symbolize the guilt felt by the main character after murdering the old man. (10 points) 6. List the main conflict(s) in your story and briefly state how they are resolved. 7. Complete the plot chart below by labeling the major elements of the story. A. Part Six: With this level of thinking skill, you are able to put
parts of the book together in a new way to form a new idea or product. Activity One: Rewrite the roles of the main characters in the book to create new outcomes. Describe what would happen when the characters change roles. Activity Two: Imagine that you are one of the main characters. Write a diary account of their daily thoughts and activities during three important events in the story. Activity Three: Write the lyrics and music to a song that one of the main characters might sing if he or she became a musical star. Bonus: Complete another of the three activities listed in #10. (Up to 10 additional points given.
