The American Civil War- An Interdisciplinary Unit
Language Arts 8-BEAULIEU

1)  Create six journal entries from the point of view of one of the following:

A Civil War Doctor or Nurse
      A wounded Soldier
      A Spy

A female posing as a male soldier
      Your own choice

Each entry that you create should be accurate to the time and place to which it refers.  In other words, it must include accurate historical details which will make it seem authentic.  Each entry should be at least one paragraph (4-6 sentences in length.)  Experiment with aging your paper if you wish to add an artistic/authentic touch.  If you would like some ideas, check out real excerpts from Dr. Cyrus Bacon's Diary on the Internet:

2)
Write 6 letters of correspondence between two people separated by the war.  There are several letters on the internet that you can read in order to get some ideas.  A letter from a soldier to his wife, written one week before he died at the Battle of Bull Run (First Manassas) can be viewed at:

5)Video-play:  Create a video of a scene from your novel or an event of the Civil War period.  You may work alone or in a group for this option.  If you prepare a video, it should be shared with the class.  A play should be performed live for the class and should include (but does not absolutely require) costumes and props.  Scripts should be turned in on the day of your presentation.

6)Novel comparison:  Read a second novel set during the American Civil War Era.   Complete the novel report as you did for the first novel and then write a comparison/contrast essay in which you compare or contrast the two novels in the following ways:  Character development, plot action, story theme(s), author's ability to write and keep your interest, accurate historical detail, and major conflicts.  (About two typed  pages maximum).
