How To Save on a Pen Drive from Your Mac Laptop

1)      Take the cap off of the end of the pen drive.  (Be careful not to lose it!)

2)      Push the metal end of the pen drive into one of the 2 USB ports on the side of the laptop.  Be sure that the MSK side is face UP.

3)      Wait and watch the pen drive.  A green light will flash . . .  slowly, then quickly, then slowly again.

4)      After this, the pen drive icon will show up on the screen.  If it has not been named yet, it will be labeled “No Name”.  The pen drive can be re-named on a PC, but we have not found a way to re-name it on the laptops.

5)      To load a document onto the pen drive, simply open the folder where the document is saved.  Click on the icon for the document, drag it to the icon for the pen drive and drop it.

6)      Watch the pen drive.  The green light will flash rapidly again and then it will return to a slow flash.  At this point the document should be loaded onto the pen drive.  You can check by double clicking on the pen drive icon and your document icon should be inside.

7)      To properly remove the pen drive . . .

Click on the pen Drive icon and drag it to the trashcan.  Notice that the trashcan icon turns into an eject icon.  Place the Pen Drive icon over the eject icon and let go.

8)      When the green light on the pen drive goes out, it is safe to remove the pen drive.  Failure to remove the pen drive correctly may ruin the work saved on it!!  Remember to replace the cap on the end of the pen drive.

Moving Work From a Laptop to a PC and Back Again

Saving as a Rich Text File (RTF)

1)      From your laptop, save your work to your laptop folder as an RTF (Rich Text File)

(When you save it, you might want to re-name it with RTF at the end so you know which file it is.)

2)      Put the pen drive into your laptop and wait for the icon to show up.

3)      Drag the RTF file from your folder to the pen drive icon and drop it in.

4)      Drag the pen drive icon to the trash (eject).

5)      Wait for the light to go out and remove your pen drive.

6)      Put the pen drive into the USB port on your PC

(often located on the back of the tower)

7)      Open the word processing program you are going to work in (like Word or Works)

8)      Click on File and scroll down to Open.

9)      Navigate to your pen drive (often found as something like Removable Disk E or F)

10)   Click on the pen drive or removable disk to open it.

11)   Double click on the RTF file you want to work on.

12)   When you are finished, re-save the file as an RTF file to your pen drive.

13)   Remove the pen drive from your PC

(usually there is no way to drag it to an eject button on a PC)

14)  To transfer the work back to your laptop, put the pen drive back into the USB port,

open  the pen drive and double click on the RTF file.

15)  Note #1:  This method will work in many cases, but not all.  All computers do not

work the same way and it is important for you to be patient and

experiment until you find a method that will work for you.  If you are

having difficulties, you can speak with Mr D or Mrs Reagan and we will

try to find a way for you to be successful at this!

16)  Note #2:  When working on either a PC or your laptop, you may need to copy the

RTF file and paste it into a Word or Works document.  After working on it, save it again as an RTF file.  When you paste it into your Word or Works program, it may not look exactly the way you typed it on the other computer.  Try not to do fancy formatting of the text until you are finished your document and you have it on the computer you want to print from.

17)  Note #3:  Remember that this information is for word processing only.  You

cannot save a presentation from your laptop on your pen drive and open

it at home unless you have the same Appleworks program.  Likewise,

a Powerpoint presentation cannot be saved on your pen drive at home and

be expected to open on your laptop.  You MAY, however, save text for those programs and then paste the text into the program on the appropriate machine.
