Identification Procedure For Grades 3 & 5

Screening Process

All students in grades 3 and 5 are screened.  At the end of the first trimester parents and teachers have an opportunity to nominate students for GATES.

Classroom teachers will meet with the Teacher of the Gifted to fill out the Twelve Traits of Giftedness: A Non-Biased Profile.  Students who exhibit 7 or more of these characteristics will be further screened. *

Parents may nominate a child for consideration by filling out the Parent Nomination Forms.  These forms will be available in the school office.

The GATES Teacher will review the NWEA scores and the OLSAT scores.  Students who fall at or above the 97%ile on the NWEA, and all students who fall at or above 130 on the OLSAT will be further screened. *

Specific Academic and General Intellectual Identification

Students who meet all three criteria are formally identified.

General Intellectual

Specific Academic

Students who meet only one of the criteria are not identified.  Parents may dispute this by using the Appeals Process.

Students who meet two of the criteria go through another process to ensure accurate data has been collected.  One of the following is pursued, depending upon which of the three criteria was not met.

·         SUBJECTIVE- GATES Teacher meets with parent for developmental history and specific criteria information.  Parents will then fill out the Twelve Traits of Giftedness: A Non-Biased Profile.

·         COGNITIVE- The Raven’s is administered and the student scores within the top 5% locally.*

·         ACHIEVEMENT- Staff collects documentation of work that exceeds classroom standards.
